Here are some things to remember when you begin your yoga practice

Breathe and relax

Movement in “Hatha” yoga is guided by your breath. “Vinyasa” yoga is a branch of Hatha yoga that aims to coordinate movement with breath with the goal of clearing the mind of chatter and developing a more relaxed and open sense of being. The breath is the most important element of yoga. You will also be reminded to relax different parts of your body where you might be carrying tension such as your jaw or your shoulders. It is often surprising to realize that we are clenching our jaws or concentrating on other things in our daily lives when we are trying to find a little peace during our practice.

Alignment is essential

For each posture, even when simply standing, it is essential to follow alignment principles. Alignment will not only help avoid unnecessary injuries but will help you attain the most out of your practice. Alignment will help with strength, posture, and developing good yoga habits. Alignment can be complex as we try to dissolve old habits but you will be reminded to gently address alignment techniques in order to better understand how movement can feel better and can expand.

Sensation is welcome but pain is not

One misconception of yoga is that it is all about flexibility. While flexibility may build over time, it is important to allow yourself to feel sensation but not pain. You can find your “edge” by allowing yourself to get into a pose only to the point where you are comfortable but not beyond. As your practice progresses, you will become more flexible, you can become stronger, you can improve your stamina, you can improve your balance and energy all while honoring where you are in your journey. Sometimes you might notice that you are more aware of different muscles in the body after a session. This is a welcome sign of transformation!

Have a little fun!

While yoga can be quite serious at times, fun is also allowed! Some of the most important muscles to flex are the ones that turn up the corners of our lips for a smile! At YogaYield, it is important to enjoy yoga and to feel good.
